Another Successful Hunt
Another fantastic hunt with Affordable Outfitters in Bryson, TX. I arrived around 730pm on Saturday with just enough time to change into my gear and hit the stand. James had me set up in a brush blind over a pond runoff that crossed a road. I settled in by 8pm and waited. Raccoons were active right after dark and then the moon came up. I was having issues with my ATN X-Sight so my dad let me borrow his Mossy .270. The moon gave me enough light to see pretty well but I still employed my Firefield night spotter scope to be sure about what was moving around out there. At about 2315 the pigs came in. A group of four medium boars came in followed by a sow with some piglets. I watched the boars mill about then decided that I needed to take a shot since the wind was at my back and I was going to get winded. I cross-haired the largest boar in the group and fired. It dropped like a rock. Bam! Bacon!
I rolled it into the water to keep it cool so it wouldn’t spoil and sat another 30 mins to see if they would come back. They didn’t so I texted James and he came and picked me up. We rolled back to my cabin and I cleaned it there. Wyatt, his son and one of the guides, had said they had a big boar coming out to the “pole” on their ranch. The Pole is just a utility pole in the middle of a field that was used by the boars for rubbing. I walked out there after cleaning my boar and was in the brush blind around 0100. The moon went down about 0200 so I was having issues seeing. But I could still make out shadows here and there and I had my FireField. At 0230 he came in. He came from my left at about 30 yards. He was moving quickly. He passed me then doubled back for the pole. I slowly brought the gun up when he stopped, grunted and ran away. He either winded me or he heard something he didn’t like. So, no shot but that spot is a good one.
Sunday night I went to the Armstrong ranch and sat at a feeder stand. I sat from 8pm to 5am….only saw cows. The wind was blowing pretty good and had the hogs bedded. So, no score but hey, that’s hunting.
